Seam Welding

Seam (roller) welding - a kind of resistance welding in which the blanks are joined continuous or intermittent seam, consisting of individual spot welds, resulting in application of the force of compression and the supply current to a rotating disk electrode (rolls).

The essence of the process
Blanks impose on each other and clamped between the two is usually disk electrodes compression force F St. (P). When applying current to the zone of contact between the metal parts on the axis of the electrode begins to heat up and melt. As the movement (rolling) of blanks between the disk electrodes are formed new weld points, overlapping or not overlapping. As with the spot welding does not require special tools to protect the melt from the interaction with the atmosphere.
Seam welding process
Depending on the nature of movement of the welding current supply and distinguish the following methods of seam welding:
  • continuous;
  • intermittent and
  • steps.
Continuous welding of continuous running suture with a constant flow of current, continuous motion pieces as well as at constant pressure disk electrodes on welded surfaces. It was of limited use because of the rapid wear of rollers and a strong heat in contact with the surfaces of parts. Important in continuous welding have a thorough cleaning of the welded surfaces, the same thickness and uniformity of the composition of connected products.

The most common discontinuous seam welding, carried out under pulsed (interrupted) supply current, continuously moving workpieces and constant pressure rollers. With each pulse of welding current is formed by a unit molded area. To form a sealed seam welded with overlapping points selected a certain ratio, the rotation speed of the electrodes and the frequency of current pulses.

When step seam welding the rollers applied constant pressure, intermittently moving parts (steps), and the current is applied only while the rollers. In this case the surface of the rollers and contacts are fewer pieces overheat. However, the machines for the welding process structurally more complex and less productive.
