Electrodes for Manual Metal Arc Welding

electrodes for manual metal arc welding - a description

Electrode - a metal or non-metallic rod is designed to supply power to the cvarivaemomu product.

Electrodes: - melting (usually the same, or similar metal with welded products) - not melting - metal (W, Th) - No metal (carbon) , depending on the thickness of welded wire products used by 0.3 ... 12 mm thick covering 0.7 ... 2.5 mm
The most common electrodes - a diameter of 3, 4, 5, 6 mm
(the diameter is the diameter of the wire without coating)

The electrode wires

It is divided into three groups according to Chem. composition:
- Carbon (up to 0.12% C)
is designed for welding of low and medium carbon steels,
some low-alloy steels
- Alloy
is designed for welding of the alloy steel
- high-alloy
designed for welding of special steels, for overlaying.

Electrode coatings. Appointment and composition.

In the electrode surface consists of several elements, for different purposes:

1) elements of Ionizing
elements facilitate stimulation of the arc and maintain its stable combustion
Example: K2CO3; CaCO3 (chalk)

2) Security features
to protect elements of the weld pool from the contact with the gases of the atmosphere. That, in turn, prevents the formation of metal oxides.
Example: K2CO3; CaCO3; starch, cellulose.
These substances form a protective barrier from CO2

3) The slag-forming elements
form a slag which solidifies on the surface and protects the weld seam is still hot from exposure to the atmosphere.
Example: K2CO3; CaF2.

4) deoxidizers
Improve the quality of the weld metal svornogo (made of metal grains are smaller, as a consequence, the seam is less brittle)
Example: Mn, depending on the type of steel - Si, Al

5) Alloying elements
allow to obtain various useful properties, common alloying element - chromium

6) The binding element
is capable of applying to the electrode wire is a mixture of all elements
Example: Na2O SiO2 (liquid glass)
